Course Description:

Gender and Communication provides the student with a critical re-examination of the state of Philippine media, specifically its portrayal of women and men. This course will acquaint the students about the root causes of gender inequalities, the persistence of concepts and ideas that perpetuate such inequalities, the interrelationships of sex role stereotyping and its translation into social institutions like the media.

Course Objectives:

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
 
A.    Recognize the different images and portrayals of women and men in the mass media which influence the perception/s of society;
B.    Understand and appreciate the unique identities of women and men; their gender relationships and differences; and their worth as persons in different societal levels and cultures;
C.    Be sensitive of the role that women and men have in actually shaping and influencing minds, opinions, and values as they go about their roles as media professionals;
D.    Identify and differentiate the images of women and men from those which are despondent and contemptible to more admirable ones;
E.    Gain a clear insight on how the media industry operates, and its practices, problems and prospects (especially about and of women) borne of the traditional operations within such industry; and
 
Value Aims:
 
               Along the conduct of the course, the student will:
 
A.   Recognize that men and women are distinct and different and yet are able to complement and reciprocate each other;
B.   Appreciate the concept of authentic womanhood and apply it in her own daily life which can contribute to development in and outside of the home;
C.   Commit to and manifest the preservation of, and safeguard and nurture the institution of marriage and family;
D.   Develop critical and analytical thinking so as to infuse fresh and genuine concern in creating alternative media images respectful of the dignity of persons;
E.   Appreciate the exchange of opinions on the course which enriches the students’ mutual understanding of their personhood;
F.    Acquire a sense of cooperation among her peers through group works and reporting;
G.   Enrich her creativity in the presentation of assigned topics in class;
H.   Be motivated to develop oneself to achieve competence, diligence and prudence in the execution of her roles and responsibilities in any work setting; and
I.      Be encouraged to work towards the genuine ideals of work and professionalism in media.
