The course provides the students with knowledge on the basic processes of communication at the interpersonal, group and mass communication systems, i.e. broadcast, print and specialized media.

The importance and role of communication and the communication systems in and outside of the country are discussed.

The use of mass media in the development process is emphasized

 

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, the students should be able to:

  1. Understand the basic processes of communication in the interpersonal, group and mass communication system;
  2. Trace the development of Philippine Mass Media;
  3. Describe the current status and environment of Philippine Mass Communication;
  4. Compare and contrast the different channels of mass media and explain their importance in the communication process and in national development;
  5. Explain the feature and functions of small and specialized media;
  6. Know the technological advances and trends in communication.

Value Aims

Each student is expected to:

  1. Internalize a broader and more realistic view of Philippine Mass Media;
  2. Identify and suggest positive means by which media can uplift Filipino values and promote national development;
  3. Realize the importance of free and balanced flow of information to nation building and human development;
  4. Engage in critical thinking, particularly on pertinent issues on responsible communication and that which may endanger the freedom provided therein;
  5. Acquire a sense of cooperation with her peers through group works and class reports;
  6. Hone her creativity in class presentation and activities.
